PICKET POST – Verely Hill Car Park (on the road between Picket Post and Burley Street) (ref SU 195 050)
If you are coming from the Southampton direction, take the A31 westwards to Picket Post just at the top of Poulner Hill, but take the exit just before the service station, signposted Burley, and follow that road. The car park is on the right just over half a mile along. The general area around this location is heathland over hard packed gravel and it rolls up and down with some easy hills and some not so easy hills. There can be a bit of sticky mud in the bottoms. The start point is also within striking distance of Castle Hill where it is possible to link up with the dismantled old railway line past Greenberry Bridge and Holmsley Station (now a popular tea rooms), and Holmsley Airfield. Then it is possible to strike back to the start point via Wilverley Inclosure, Bisterne and Burley Inclosure depending on mud and time.
