Showing:Matley Heath

Matley Heath Sunday 21st March 2010 ()
Get to Lyndhurst and take the B3056 towards Beaulieu. Follow the road for a couple of miles and Matley Passage car park is just before the sharp left hand bend by the entrance to Denny Wood campsite. Whilst the track across Matley Passage itself is off limits on the official route map, there are a number of attractive alternatives around the Denny Wood area and in the Parkhill and Ramnor Inclosures near Hollands Wood and Standing Hat. By striking a little farther afield, the ever popular Diltons Farm and Beaulieu airfield beckons with the chance of a return via Pig Bush.

Post-ride pub: The Beaulieu Road Inn; continue on the road from Lyndhurst towards Beaulieu for ½mile to arrive at the pub by the railway bridge.

Danebury Hill Sunday 4th April 2010 ()Out of forest
Danebury Hill can be reached from Stockbridge by following the High Street westwards through the town (A30). Just as you leave the town boundary, the road turns sharp right and climbs a steep hill. Just as the hill starts to swing round to the left, the road to Danebury Hill can be taken off to the right for a mile or two. The venue is clearly signposted off to the left of this road. We can ride around the eastern perimeter of Middle Wallop airfield before heading westwards via Kentsboro, Oklahoma Farm and Georgia Farm and then turn southwards at Over Wallop. Following on will be a sharp rise up Whiteshoot Hill near Broughton and then it’s Kings Somborne (Horsebridge) and the Test Way all the way to Fullerton where on a hot day a call at the Mayfly pub is a must, and on a cooler day is still a possibilty. Then a mere jaunt up Hazel Down and Charity Down to return to the car park.

Alternatively we could ride off in the opposite direction towards Longstock, Stockbridge Down and Chilbolton. A grand outing.

Post-ride pub: somewhere in Stockbridge; to be decided

Micheldever Station Sunday 18th April 2010 ()Out of forest
This ride will start from the Railtrack car park (now charging to park on Sundays so bring some coins for the meter) at Micheldever Station which is to be found nestled in the crook of the junction between the M3 and the A303 trunk route to the west country. It is 3 miles north of the village of Micheldever itself and is most easily reached by following the A33 from where it splits off the M3 at the Winnall junction at Winchester (junction 9).This junction also serves the A34 to Newbury and both A roads run the same course for half a mile before the A33 splits off to the right.

The ride can head off northwards towards Whitchurch and Laverstoke or go south and west towards Sutton Scotney, Barton Stacey and then northwards to come back via Whitchurch

Martin half day or full day Monday 3rd May 2010 ()All day ride Out of forest
The village of Martin is situated to the south of the A354 road that runs from Salisbury to Blandford Forum. For most of us, the village is probably most easily reached by heading north-west for eight miles or so out of Fordingbridge passing through Sandleheath, Damerham and Tidpit before arriving at Martin. Approaching from this direction, the car park can be found by taking a left turn in the village itself onto a dead end road at the end of which will be found a car park at the foot of Blagdon Hill. We shall meet at this car park and head out for the bridleways and ancient drove roads which criss-cross Cranbourne Chase. There will be some challenging uphills, fast downhills and panoramic ridgeways in this delightful area.

Post-ride pub: the intention is to stop half way round for a pub lunch, therefore no need for a post-ride pub.

Deerleap (for those not going on the Brecons weekend trip) Sunday 16th May 2010 ()
This place is on the eastern boundary of the forest and can link up via Ashurst into Ironhill Inclosure and thence to Lyndhurst before circling down through Denny Wood and then finding a return route. The club ran a ride from this location as an option for stay-at-home members the last time there was a mass exodus of most members to the Brecon Beacons for a 2 day stay. It was good fun for the half dozen that turned up, so we are running it again as an option to the revisit trip to Wales being held this weekend, this year. The route will be an ad-hoc thing put together on the day depending on who turns up.

Post-ride pub: the Happy Cheese, Ashurst

Key:

Out of forest - expect more hills. All day ride - with pub lunch, but caution beginners as these rides are long!
